What is Neurosarcoidosis?
Sarcoidosis is a progressive multi-system disease that commonly affects young adults. Neurosarcoidosis refers to the neurological manifestations of sarcoidosis. Symptoms vary widely and may include facial palsy, muscle weakness and wasting, numbness in various parts of the body, excessive thirst, fatigue, headache, seizures, lethargy, fever, memory loss, hallucinations, irritability, agitation, depression, loss of taste, and voice, hearing and vision impairments.
Is there any treatment?
The cause for sarcoidosis is unknown, and there is no cure. Corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs may relieve symptoms in selected patients.
What is the prognosis?
The prognosis for patients with neurosarcoidosis varies. Most individuals with the disorder respond to treatment and, therefore, fare well. In some cases, the disorder disappears after a few months; in other cases, it progresses slowly but steadily. For a small%age of individuals the complications may be fatal.
