Ambien (Zolpidem tartrate) is indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia (to help you fall asleep and stay asleep for a proper rest). Hypnotics should usually be limited to 7 to 10 days of use; and reevaluation of the patient is recommended if they are to be taken for over 2 to 3 weeks. Your doctor has prescribed Ambien to help you sleep.
Ambien is used to treat different types of sleep problems, such as:
- Trouble falling asleep.
- Waking up too early in the morning.
- Waking up often in the night.

What side effects can this medication cause?
Although side effects from zolpidem are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- drowsiness
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- constipation
- diarrhea
- headache
- dry mouth
- muscle aches
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
- skin rash
- itching
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- chest pain
- difficulty breathing
- fever
- behavior changes
- mental confusion
- abnormal thinking or dreams
- depression
