What is Benicar used for?

Benicar is the latest entry in a special class of hypertension (high blood pressure) drugs called "angiotensin-II receptor blockers." Benicar is used to treat high blood pressure in adults. It may be used alone or with other medicines that treat high blood pressure.

Who should not take Benicar?

Do not take Benicar if you are allergic to Benicar or to any of the ingredients in Benicar.

Special Warning with Benicar:

Do not take Benicar if you are pregnant. If you get pregnant while taking Benicar, stop taking Benicar right away and call your health care provider. When used during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, olmesartan can cause injury and even death to the developing baby. Notify your doctor immediately if you think you might be pregnant.

What should I tell my health care provider?

Tell your health care provider if you:

  • are trying to become pregnant, are already pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • have or had kidney problems

Tell your health care provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your health care provider if you are taking duiretics (water pills).

What are some possible side effects of Benicar?

The most common side effect with Benicar is dizziness.

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking olmesartan and contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical treatment:

  • an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives)
  • little or no urine
  • diarrhea or upset stomach
  • headache insomnia
