What is Clarinex used for?

Clarinex is used to treat symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis ("hay fever") in patients 12 years of age and older. It blocks the action of histamine, a natural substance in your body that is released by your immune system during an allergic reaction.

Clarinex can be used to help relieve the symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergies — itchy, watery eyes; sneezing; and runny nose — caused by exposure to indoor allergens such as dust mite, mold spores, pet dander, and outdoor allergens caused by pollen from trees, grasses, or weeds.

Who should not take Clarinex?

You should not take Clarinex if you are allergic to Claritin or Clarinex, or to any of the ingredients in Claritin or Clarinex.

What should I tell my health care provider?

Tell your health care provider if you:

  • have or had liver problems
  • have or had kidney problems
  • are trying to become pregnant, are already pregnant, or are breast-feeding

Tell your health care provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some medicines may affect how Clarinex works or Clarinex may affect how your other medicines work.

What are some possible side effects of Clarinex?

  • pharyngitis (sore throat)
  • head ache
  • nausea
  • dry mouth
  • sleepiness
  •  tiredness
