What is Kepivance used for?

Generic Name: palifermin
Date of Approval: December 15, 2004
Kepivance is used to decrease the incidence and lenght of severe oral mucositis in persons with hematologic malignancies receiving myelotoxic therapy requiring hematopoietic stem cell support.

Who should not take Kepivance?

The safety and efficacy of Kepivance have not been established in patients with nonhematologic malignancies. Kepivance has been shown to enhance the growth of human epithelial tumor cell lines in vitro and to increase the rate of tumor cell line growth in a human carcinoma xenograft model

What should I tell my health care provider?

Kepivance should not be administered within 24 hours before, during infusion of, or within 24 hours after administration of myelotoxic chemotherapy.

What are some possible side effects of Kepivance?

Skin rash in less than 1% of patients. Other serious reactions occurred in patients who received Kepivance or placebo with the most frequent being fever, gastrointestinal events, and respiratory events.

Other possible side effect include rash, erythema, edema, pruritus, oral/perioral dysesthesia, tongue discoloration, tongue thickening, and alteration of taste.
