Tramadol (ultram)

Tramadol HCl is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. This drug should be used as directed and only for the period of time determined by the physician. It also may be used to treat pain caused by surgery and chronic conditions such as cancer or joint pain.

For the treatment of painful conditions tramadol 50 mg to 100 mg can be administered as needed for relief every four to six hours, not to exceed 400 mg per day.

What side effects can this medication cause?

Although side effects from tramadol are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • dizziness
  • headache
  • drowsiness
  • blurred vision
  • upset stomach
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

  • fast heartbeat
  • redness, swelling, and itching of the face
  • numbness or tingling of the hands and feet
  • difficulty breathing
  • changes in urination
  • seizures
