What is Wellbutrin used for?

Wellbutrin XL is used for the treatment of depression. Doctors believe that depression is caused by an imbalance of certain chemicals in your brain. For some, depression will happen once in their lives. For others, bouts of depression may come and go through out their lives. In the course of a lifetime, over 1 in 6 people suffer from depression.

The symptoms that help a doctor identify depression in a patient include:

  • constant feelings of sadness, irritability, or tension
  • decreased interest or pleasure in usual activities or hobbies
  • loss of energy, feeling tired despite lack of activity
  • a change in appetite, with significant weight loss or weight gain
  • a change in sleeping patterns, such as difficulty sleeping, early morning awakening, or sleeping too much
  • restlessness or feeling slowed down
  • decreased ability to make decisions or concentrate
  • feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, or guilt
  • thoughts of suicide or death

General information on Wellbutrin?

Once you feel better, it is important to keep taking WELLBUTRIN XL for as long as your doctor instructs. Although you may start to feel better within a couple of weeks, the full antidepressant effect may not be seen for several weeks.

Avoid alcohol or drink it only in moderation while taking Wellbutrin. Alcohol may increase the risk of having a seizure while taking Wellbutrin.

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions such as heart, liver, or kidney disease.

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other dangerous activities. Wellbutrin may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities

What are some possible side effects of Wellbutrin?

The most common side effects of Wellbutrin XL are weight loss, skin rash, sweating, ringing in the ears, loss of appetite, dry mouth, shakiness, stomach pain, agitation, anxiety, dizziness, trouble sleeping, muscle pain, nausea, fast heartbeat, sore throat, a low risk of sexual side effects and urinating more often.

If you have nausea, take the medication with food. Do not change your dose or stop taking it without talking to your doctor.
