The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is cautioning people not to eat Veggie Booty flavor of snack food, marketed by Robert's American Gourmet, due to possible contamination with Salmonella, bacteria that cause gastrointestinal illness. It is notable that this same company was caught a ew years back faking the nutritional information on there packaging,
The FDA is advising consumers to throw out any Veggie Booty products they have in their home. Veggie Booty is sold in a flexible plastic foil bag in four ounce, one ounce, and one-half ounce packages. No other flavors or varieties of snack food marketed by the company have been associated with Salmonella Wandsworth contamination, but I would sure be careful buying anything from them till they get there act together.
Veggie Booty is often consumed by children, so parents are encouraged to watch their kids, and seek medical care if they observe signs of illness. Children can react worse to these kinds of things than adults.
People who have recently eaten Veggie Booty and who have experienced any of the symptoms mentioned below should contact a doctor immediately.
This warning is based on 52 reports of sickness across 17 states, beginning in March 2007. Almost all the illnesses have occurred in kids under 10 years old, with the most cases in toddlers. Most people had reported bloody diarrhea; four were hospitalized. The FDA learned of the illness on June 27 from the CDC, which conducted an investigation of the illnesses with local health officials. The outbreak is considered likely to be continuous.
Salmonella causes diarrhea; the diarrhea is often accompanied by stomach cramps and fever. Symptoms typically begin within one to four days after being exposed to the bacteria. In babies, persons with poor health and those with weakened immune systems, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections.
